ACSS Newsletter: Mac Updates and Lion Prep

Most Mac users are surely aware that in July the latest version of OS X will be released. This will be the first time Apple releases an operating system update as a download. And at a price of only $29.99, it's a steal!

In preparation for Lion's debute Apple just recently released an update for Snow Leopard, which will prep your system for Lion. Since this update also includes some other fixes for Snow Leopard, you should apply the update regardless of whether you plan to upgrade to Lion or not.

Prior to upgrading to Lion, however, there an important consideration everyone should take. Under Lion those apps that required Rosetta will no longer work. In order to figure out which apps will not work after upgrading to Lion go to the link provided below and read the instructions for identifying those apps that will not work. This will help you better determine whether to upgrade or not.

Updates and Google Remote Printing

Microsoft Updates

First off, another second Tuesday of the month has past and Microsoft has release a slew of updates for it's products. This month saw 16 patches released, nine of which are critical. So be prepared to update your computers this month.

While talking about updates, I've noticed the following issue when updating Windows 7 computers. After a reboot, but prior to getting to a logon screen, I've witnessed more than once a situation where a Windows 7 system will seem to hanging, stating that it's applying the updates and that you should not shut down the computer. If your computer seems to be taking way too long, try pressing the Ctrl + Alt + Delete delete keys all together. In my experience this took me directly to the logon screen. Essentially, there some sort of screw up and the system is not automatically displaying the logon screen.

Google Remote Printing

If you use Google's Chrome browser, you can enable it to allow you to remotely print that computer from basically anywhere. By going into Chrome's preferences into the section "Under the Hood" you will discover a section titled, "Google Cloud Print." Here you can enable Chrome to allow remote printing to any printer that is enabled on that computer. So let's say you want to print up some documents on your home or work computer. Provided you have left Chrome open on that computer and have enabled the cloud printing feature, you will be able to send those documents for printing to that computer from your Google account. This means you must be logged into Google and printing something from your Google account. This can be particularly helpful if you need to print something from a cellphone or a tablet.

Security News

COMPUTER AND MOBILE PHONE TRACKER

After yesterday's news flash about a guy who tracked down his stolen MacBook using an application that sends photos from one's laptop, as well as reporting the laptop's location, I wanted to remind everyone about a post I sent out probably a year ago.

There is an open-source and FREE application that will track your laptop or android-based phone. The application is called PREY and works on Windows, Apple, Linux computers, as well as Android-based phones. According to the website, they an app for the iPhone is still in development. Should any of these be stolen you can trace the location of the device as well as put a lojack on it.
In addition to installing the software on your computer or phone, you will have to set up an online account which is then used to administer tracking of you device should it get stolen. A free account will let you monitor up to three devices.
The software is available at:

MAC VIRUSES

Also, since there's been a lot of press about viruses for Mac computers, I just want to repeat what I've been saying from day one. Get virus protection for your Apple computers!!! If you are a home user there are a few free anti-virus applications out there.
I personally can only vouch for two. I have not tried any others.
These are Sophos and ClamXav.
Each can be obtained through the following links, respectively.
