ACSS Newsletter: Miscellaneous Mumblings

Microsoft Updates.

BTW, Tuesday, May 17, Microsoft release it's monthly updates. It was a mild patch release, but there were a few critical updates. So, be sure to update your Windows machine.

A Must-Have Andriod App

For those of you with an Android device I just found out about a music app you must have. Called Ghosttown, this app is not a game, but probably the ultimate cloud-based music player. Want to listen to some ABBA? Nine Inch Nails? Miles Davis? (btw, this is the only place you'll ever see ABBA and NIN mentioned back to back!). But you don't want a potpourri of music similar to that artist, like Pandora offers. You want to listen to specific songs, or entire albums!!! This app lets you do that.
Just type in the name of the artist and it will give you a list of albums by that artist to choose from and listen to IN FULL!
Oh, wait, get this. The app is completely free!

JoliOS/Jolicloud

I've been wanting to write about JoliOS (previously, Jolicloud) for a long time now. So, here it is.
A lot of you know that I'm a linux fan, and JoliOS is another distro I use extensively. But what is so attractive about JoliOS?
Many you have probably heard about Google's foray into the OS market with it's own Google Chrome OS. But you can really download and install it. It only comes installed on Google-approved notebooks.
What is perhaps revolutionary about Google Chrome OS is that all your documents, mail, pictures, etc. are stored on the web. In fact most of the applications are web-based.
This is exactly what JoliOS does, but with a few advantages.

1. JoliOS is not completely cloud-based. [NB. Google Chrome OS seems to be moving in this direction, as well.] You can have local documents, files, etc., as well as cloud-based ones.

2. Like Google, your desktop is exactly the same across all computers. So, if you've installed JoliOS on your laptop and added some programs to it, when you log on to your JoliOS desktop, those same apps will be sync'ed up and available.

3. In addition to having the same desktop across all computers, you have access to your desktop on the web!
By virtue of the fact that you have created an account with JoliOS by having installed it, you also have your own personal JoliOS desktop on the web. Thus you can log into your account at Jolicloud's website and you will have the same desktop as you have on your computer(s). Note that any application that had to be installed on your JoliOS computer will not be available to you in the web interface. But that shouldn't matter, since they are probably provided by the computer you're using to access the web portal.
For example, the Google Chrome browser, which is JoliOS's default browser, is not an available application in the web interface. You see, you're already using a browser to get to your JoliOS! Right? So you don't need it.
Also, if you add any apps to your web portal, they will, of course, be synced up to your JoliOS computers.

If you're confused, I would encourage you to visit Jolicloud's website (below) and watch the presentation and take a tour.

By going to JoliOS's website, you can download an installation program directly to your Windows computer. Or you can download a USB installation and install it by booting from the USB stick. I have used both methods and experienced no problems.
