A great read is Michelle Goldberg's "Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism." In her exposé of the fundamentalist right, Michelle shows the depths to which this really fringe group has penetrated into pivotal levels of community, state and local government. The feat has often been accomplished with the support (political and monetary) of the government, despite a strict Constitutional division between church and state. The anti-constitutional liberties that have been provided via Bush's faith-based initiative are exposed for what they are.
If there is any doubt as to the depth to which the fundies have penetrated within government institution another good read is Michael Weinstein's "With God On Our Side," which exposes proselytizing in the military. I have not read this book, but I have heard "Mikey" speak on several occasions, as well as other individuals within the military at present. The stories collaborate one another and therefore I am inclined to believe their story. There is, by the way, a report on Dan Rather's show about Michael Weinstein, which can be viewed at:
